To start off the Tamure style, wrap the pareo around your hips lengthwise and tie the ends to one side. This will leave some slack to work with as you roll the fabric upwards. Pull the extra length to your other hip and tie leaving it loose. With hands on both hips, start rolling fabric up and forward. This creates a "puffed" hipband. Continue to roll front until fabric comes up to the knee or where you are comfortable with the length.

Roll the back side to match the front. Adjust at hips for comfort. And there you have it. The perfect pareo tie to practice the tamure. Of course, you can use this tie to perform in or create a fun costume.

If you are a dancer, mastering the tamure is one of the most rewarding challenges. Keeping rhythm, posture and style are constantly practiced, even by those who teach and dance professionally.

To complete Tehani's look, we added a ti leaf hipband, wristlet and hei tiare. We also added a woven niau blanc layer and our tiare hairpicks. Tehani is wearing our professional coconut shell bra top as well.

Mastering Tahitian Dance
by Tehani

Keeping up my endurance requires dedication, concentration and proper breathing. I recommend to always putting your heels together when stationary. This helps in keeping your shoulders from moving up and down. Extending of motions (every teacher I've ever been with has constantly emphasized extending) and completing your motions help to create a memorable performance.

As an award-winning professional Tahitian dancer, our featured model (above), Tehani, is constantly performing.

No Tahitian dancer should be caught without these essentials. Whether you are doing the tamure in a skirt or a pareo, with iis or shells, there's more to Tahitian dance than shaking the hips. Take a look at some of our collection favorites:
